Blepharoplasty

Eye lid surgery is a procedure to correct visible signs of aging in the eye area of the face. Since the skin around eyes is relatively thin, it is prone to the effects of aging that can make a person look tired and/or older due to droopiness, puffiness, and wrinkled skin. Since the muscles that hold up our eye lids relax over time, removal of excess skin and underlying tissue from the eye area can make a face appear noticeably younger and more refreshed.

Blepharoplasty can be done on either upper or lower eye lids, or both depending on the patient’s needs. Incisions are made along the natural crease lines of upper eye lids and below the lash line for lower eye lids, helping cover scars more easily. Fine sutures are also used to make the scar less noticeable. To refresh the look of the eyes, excess skin, muscle and fatty tissue will be removed from the eye lids and the eye lid is then sutured back together.

It is normal for there to be swelling and bruising for a week or so after the surgery.  Persistant bruising can easily be covered up with makeup.  Scars are minimal after the procedure as they are located in the natural creases of the eye, and they will decrease in appearance over time.  Scars can be resurfaced using Fraxel Re:Store to further blend the scar with surrounding skin.

Since this procedure is generally considered to be minor, it can be performed with local anesthesia and IV sedation together. Blepharoplasty cannot correct issues of discoloration, wrinkles like crow’s feet, or lift sagging eyebrows, so some patients choose additional or alternative procedures such as Ulthera, Thermage, laser resurfacing,  brow lifts, or face lifts.
