Pearly Penile Papules

What are Pearly Penile Papules

Pearly penile papules are small fleshy dome-shaped bumps that form in a ring around the corona of the head of the penis. They are usually found in rows making them appear like a string of pearls. They are completely benign growths, and are not acquired due to a sexually transmitted disease.

While they are more common in uncircumcised males, pearly penile papules are found as a normal variation in about a quarter of all males, and are more frequently found in the second or third decade of life. There is no medical need to have pearly penile papules removed but some men are uncomfortable during sexual activity or unhappy with their physical appearance.

What are the treatment options?

Treatment is fairly simple as the pearly penile papules can be easily ablated with a CO2 laser like the Fraxel Re:pair laser.  There is little to no discomfort during treatment as the area is numbed with a topical cream. The procedure takes a few minutes and afterwards, recovery is generally minimal and not excessively painful. There will be some scabbing and swelling of the treated area but both conditions are temporary and will subside in a couple of weeks following treatment. Pain medications can be prescribed to manage discomfort in the recovery period but may not be needed at all.
